Green Manufacturing

At RRD, we are keenly aware that green manufacturing is essential to the survival of business, as well as mankind. We seek to apply green and effective approaches to every aspect of our production and operations, by improving resource efficiency, minimizing waste and pollutions, and upgrading green supply chain.

Resource Efficiency

We strive to identify, measure and continuously improve efficiencies associated with consumption and use of energy, raw materials, water and other resources.

Wastepaper Collection and Baler Equipment

Consolidating from 3 sets into 1 set with a new energy efficient motor and frequency conversion function, resulting in an energy savings of 154 MWh per years

Reusing Water after Cleaning

When wastewater is generated, our RRD Humen site ensures it is not only to the standards for discharge, but also clean enough to raise fish.

Waste Minimization

We are keenly aware that natural resources are limited. Reduce, re-use and recycle (3R) are effective approaches for us to manage general solid waste. We seek to apply the 3R principle to every aspect of our operations, which span pre-media, printing, binding, business services and distribution.

Through our relentless efforts, we have made progress as following:

PAPER & ALUMINUM PLATES RECYCLED

• • Humen: 10.5 million kg paper and 328,000 kg aluminium plates.
• • Shanghai: 2.9 million kg paper and 35,000 kg aluminium plates.
• • Liaobu: 11.7 million kg paper and 94,000 kg aluminium plates.
• • Chengdu: 3.7 million kg paper and 21,000 kg aluminium plates.
• • Kunshan: 2.9 million kg paper (aluminium plates not used at this location).

AIR EMISSIONS REDUCTION

Shanghai Qingpu, Liaobu, Humen, Chengdu and Kunshan China sites: air emissions reduction through the installation of pollution control devices on all web and sheet-fed presses, and lamination machinery, and perfect binders.

SOLID WASTE REDUCTION

Our Humen location subdivides domestic solid waste and industrial solid waste, thereby increasing the recycling rate and reducing industrial solid waste by 20 tonnes per month and 240 tonnes per year.

WASTE WATER RECYCLE AND RE-USE

Our Humen site is also focused on water savings in their pre-press plate processor. By optimizing the filtration system, 10-15 tonnes of water is saved every day with an annual water saving expected to be 4,000 tonnes.

RR Donnelley (Guangdong) Printing Solutions Company Limited was recognized as 5-Star enterprises and Green Leader for the efforts to promote upstream and downstream partners to join in green production.

RRD GPSL is in the process of being certified by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology of the People‘s Republic of China as Green Supply Chain Management Enterprises. During the application, we did Carbon Inventory Assessment, Carbon Counting of Products and improved the Green Supply Chain Management System in our organization.
